What is Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)?
Pulmonary fibrosis is a group of serious lung diseases that affect the respiratory system. This condition causes scar tissues to build up in the lungs, which makes the lungs unable to transport oxygen into the bloodstream effectively. The disease usually affects people between the ages of 50 and 70. From the bloodstream, it travels to your organs.
In IPF, scar tissue is thick, like the scars you get on your skin after a cut. It slows oxygen flow from your lungs to your blood, which can keep your body from working as it should. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis belongs to a group of conditions called interstitial lung diseases which describes lung diseases that involve inflammation or scarring in the lung.
There is no cure for IPF, but treatment can slow the damage to your lungs.
