What is Invasive aspergillosis?
Aspergillosis is an infection caused by Aspergillus, a common mold ( a type of fungus) that lives indoors and outdoors. Most people breathe in Aspergillus spores every day without getting sick. The types of health problems caused by Aspergillus include allergic reactions, lung infections, and infections in other organs.
- What are the signs and symptoms of Invasive aspergillosis?
Invasive aspergillosis usually occurs in people who are already sick from other medical conditions, so it can be difficult to know which symptoms are related to an Aspergillus infection. The symptoms of invasive aspergillosis in the lungs include:
Fever
Chest pain
Cough
Coughing up blood
Shortness of breath
Other symptoms can develop if the infection spreads from the lungs to other parts of the body.
What is Esophageal candidiasis?
Esophageal candidiasis is caused by yeast ( a yeast of fungus) called Candida. Candida normally lives on the skin and inside the body, in places such as the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina, without causing any problems. Sometimes Candida can multiply and cause an infection if the environment inside the mouth, throat, or esophagus changes in a way that encourages fungal growth.
Candidiasis in the esophagus ( the tube that connects the throat to the stomach) is called esophagus candidiasis or Candida esophagitis. Esophageal candidiasis is one of the most common infections in people living with HIV/AIDS.
- What are the signs and symptoms of Esophageal Candidiasis?
Candidiasis in the mouth and throat can have many different symptoms including:
White patches on the inner cheeks, tongue, roof of the mouth, and throat
Redness or soreness
Cotton-like feeling in the mouth
Loss of taste
Pain while eating or swallowing
Cracking and redness at the corners of the mouth
Symptoms of candidiasis in the esophagus are usually pain when swallowing and difficulty swallowing.
What is Scedosporium Apiospermum?
Scedosporium apiospermum is a rare cause of infection but it is increasingly being reported among immunocompromised individuals around the world. There are two cases of scedosporium, one of keratitis and the other of nasal polyp both from immunocompetent patients. The two cases were successfully treated with voriconazole. The diseases caused by Scedosporium are diverse, and they range from the respiratory tract to allergic bronchopulmonary reactions. These infections include skin and soft tissue infections.
Keratitis caused by dematiaceous fungi is increasing worldwide and they were reported to account for 10- 15% of all fungal keratitis. They are the third most frequently encountered fungi.
What is a Fusarium?
Fusarium species are ubiquitous and may be found in the soil, air, and plants. Fusarium species can cause mycotoxicosis in humans following ingestion of food that has been populated by the fungal organism. In humans, fusarium species can also cause disease that is localized, focally invasive, or disseminated. It affects immunocompromised individuals with infection of immunocompetent persons. Localized infection includes septic arthritis, cystitis, and brain abscess. In this situation, a good response may be expected after surgery or oral therapy. Disseminated infection occurs when two or more non-contiguous sites are involved. When disseminated, fusarium infection is present therapy with antifungal agents has generally been disappointing with the chances of a successful resolution being enhanced if the neutropenia can be corrected on time.
