Sevelamer is a non-absorbed phosphate-binding polymer. Taken with meals, it binds phosphate from food in the gut so that it is passed out in the stool instead of being absorbed. It contains no calcium or aluminium.
It is approved for controlling hyperphosphataemia in adults with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, and, for sevelamer carbonate in Europe, also in adults not on dialysis with a raised phosphate level and in children. Sevelamer comes as two salts, the hydrochloride (originator brand Renagel) and the carbonate (Renvela), which are not always interchangeable in labelling.
