Cinacalcet is a calcimimetic. It makes the calcium-sensing receptor on the parathyroid glands more sensitive to calcium in the blood, which reduces the secretion of parathyroid hormone and lowers blood calcium.
It is approved for secondary hyperparathyroidism in adults with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, and in Europe in children on dialysis when standard treatment is not enough; for hypercalcaemia in patients with parathyroid carcinoma; and for hypercalcaemia in primary hyperparathyroidism when surgery is not appropriate or not possible. The originator brand is Mimpara (Sensipar in the US).
Blood calcium is monitored during treatment because levels can fall too low.
