Granisetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy release serotonin from cells in the gut, which triggers vomiting through 5-HT3 receptors on nerves, and granisetron blocks those receptors.
It is approved for preventing nausea and vomiting associated with emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, including high-dose cisplatin, and with radiotherapy, and, as an injection, for preventing and treating post-operative nausea and vomiting. It is available as tablets, injection, a transdermal patch and an extended-release injection in some countries. The originator brand is Kytril.
