About calcium leucovorin: drug class and approved uses
Calcium leucovorin, also called calcium folinate or folinic acid, is a reduced form of folic acid. It does not need the enzyme that methotrexate blocks, so it can bypass that block, and it strengthens the binding of fluorouracil to its target enzyme.
It is approved as rescue after high-dose methotrexate therapy and to counter the effects of methotrexate overdose or impaired methotrexate elimination; in combination with fluorouracil for colorectal cancer; and for megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency when oral folic acid is not appropriate. It is not used for pernicious anaemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Leucovorin is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
Leucovorin is part of the FOLFOX and FOLFIRI regimens, so oncology buyers usually order it together with fluorouracil, oxaliplatin and irinotecan, all of which are in our catalog. It is supplied as injection in vials and, in some brands, as tablets, so state the form and strength you need. Storage conditions are printed on each brand's pack.
Calcium Leucovorin is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
