Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic medicine with a mechanism different from older antiepileptics. It binds synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A), which is involved in the release of neurotransmitters, and so reduces abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
It is approved for partial-onset seizures, with or without secondary generalisation, alone or as add-on treatment, in adults and children; as add-on treatment for myoclonic seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy; and as add-on treatment for primary generalised tonic-clonic seizures. It is available as tablets, oral solution and an intravenous infusion. The originator brand is Keppra.
