About co-trimoxazole: drug class and approved uses
Co-trimoxazole is a fixed combination of two antibacterials, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, in a 5 to 1 ratio. The two block successive steps in the bacterial synthesis of folic acid, which bacteria need to make DNA.
It is approved for urinary tract infections; for the treatment and prevention of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, particularly in people with HIV or other immune suppression; for acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and acute otitis media in some countries; for shigellosis; and for travellers' diarrhoea. The WHO recommends co-trimoxazole prophylaxis for many people living with HIV, and it is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Originator brands include Bactrim and Septrin.
The products in our catalog are double-strength tablets containing sulfamethoxazole 800mg and trimethoprim 160mg. HIV programmes often order co-trimoxazole together with antiretrovirals such as tenofovir, lamivudine and dolutegravir, which we also list. The tablets are kept at room temperature and ship without a cold chain.
Co-trimoxazole is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
