Ethambutol is an antimycobacterial medicine. It inhibits arabinosyl transferases, enzymes that Mycobacterium tuberculosis needs to build its cell wall, and it stops the bacteria from multiplying.
It is approved for pulmonary tuberculosis, always in combination with other antituberculosis medicines to prevent resistance. In standard WHO regimens ethambutol is given with isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide during the initial intensive phase of treatment. It is also used for some non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections. Ethambutol is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines; the original brand was Myambutol.
Ethambutol can affect vision, causing optic neuritis, so vision and colour vision are checked before and during treatment.
