Voriconazole is a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal. It inhibits a fungal enzyme needed to make ergosterol, an essential part of the fungal cell membrane.
It is approved for invasive aspergillosis; candidaemia in non-neutropenic patients and other deep Candida infections; oesophageal candidiasis; and serious fungal infections caused by Scedosporium and Fusarium species in patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond to other therapy. In Europe it is also approved for preventing invasive fungal infections in high-risk recipients of stem cell transplants. The originator brand is Vfend, and voriconazole is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
Voriconazole is supplied as tablets and as powder for intravenous infusion, and hospitals often switch from one to the other, so state which form and strength you need. Blood levels are commonly measured because they vary between patients. Posaconazole, fluconazole and amphotericin B are also in our catalog, which is useful for haematology and transplant units.
