About linagliptin: drug class and approved uses

Linagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, also called a gliptin. By blocking DPP-4 it increases the levels of incretin hormones, which raise insulin release and lower glucagon release in response to meals.

It is approved for type 2 diabetes in adults, as an addition to diet and exercise, alone or in combination with other glucose-lowering medicines such as metformin, sulfonylureas or insulin. Unlike most gliptins, linagliptin is eliminated mainly through the bile rather than the kidneys. The originator brand is Trajenta (Tradjenta in the US); combinations include linagliptin with metformin (Jentadueto) and with empagliflozin (Glyxambi).

Our catalog lists linagliptin tablets and combinations with SGLT2 inhibitors and with metformin. Metformin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin are also in our catalog, so diabetes-focused distributors can order several classes together. Gliptins on their own seldom cause low blood sugar, but the risk rises when they are combined with a sulfonylurea or insulin. The tablets are kept at room temperature and ship without a cold chain.

Linagliptin is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
