Metformin is a biguanide. It lowers blood glucose mainly by reducing the amount of glucose the liver produces, and it also improves the body's sensitivity to insulin. It does not stimulate insulin release, so on its own it rarely causes low blood sugar.
It is approved for type 2 diabetes in adults, and in children from about ten years of age, as an addition to diet and exercise, either alone or in combination with other oral glucose-lowering medicines or insulin. It is usually the first medicine prescribed for type 2 diabetes. The originator brand is Glucophage, and metformin is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
Metformin is supplied as immediate-release and extended-release tablets and in many fixed-dose combinations, for example with glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, or with gliptins such as linagliptin; the metformin products in our catalog include both single-ingredient tablets and such combinations.
