About azacitidine: drug class and approved uses

Azacitidine is a pyrimidine nucleoside analogue and hypomethylating agent. It is built into RNA and DNA and inhibits DNA methyltransferase, which can switch back on genes that control normal blood cell maturation, and it is also directly toxic to abnormal blood-forming cells.

Injectable azacitidine is approved for myelodysplastic syndromes, in Europe specifically for intermediate-2 and high-risk disease in adults not eligible for stem cell transplantation; for chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia; and for acute myeloid leukaemia in older adults not eligible for transplantation. In the United States it is also approved for juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia. The originator brand is Vidaza. A separate oral tablet (Onureg) has its own approval for AML maintenance and is not interchangeable.

Our catalog lists azacitidine 100mg powder for injection, given subcutaneously or intravenously in hospital and handled under cytotoxic safe-handling procedures. Haematology departments are the main buyers. The unopened vials are kept at room temperature. State the quantity when you enquire.

Azacitidine is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
