Cabazitaxel is a semi-synthetic taxane. Like docetaxel it stabilises microtubules and stops cancer cells from dividing, but it is a poor substrate for the drug-efflux pumps that make some tumours resistant to docetaxel.
It is approved, in combination with prednisone or prednisolone, for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer in patients previously treated with a docetaxel-containing regimen. The originator brand is Jevtana. It is given by intravenous infusion in hospital, and preventive medicines against allergic reactions and low blood counts are commonly used, as decided by the oncologist.
Cabazitaxel is supplied as a concentrate in a vial; some brands come with a separate diluent and others as a single vial, and the concentrations differ, so state the brand and presentation you need.
