Capecitabine is an oral fluoropyrimidine. It is a prodrug that is converted, partly inside tumour tissue, into fluorouracil, which blocks DNA synthesis in dividing cells.
It is approved for colorectal cancer, as adjuvant treatment of stage III colon cancer and for metastatic disease, and for metastatic breast cancer, alone or in combination with docetaxel after failure of prior chemotherapy. Depending on the regulator, approvals also cover advanced gastric cancer in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy, and, in the US, pancreatic cancer and certain gastric and oesophageal cancers. The originator brand is Xeloda, and capecitabine is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
Because it is taken as tablets, capecitabine is often an alternative to infused fluorouracil. Oxaliplatin, docetaxel, lapatinib and fluorouracil are also in our catalog.
