Cilnidipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. Unlike most medicines in its class, it blocks both L-type calcium channels in blood vessel walls and N-type calcium channels at sympathetic nerve endings, so it lowers blood pressure with less of the reflex rise in heart rate seen with some other dihydropyridines.
It is approved for hypertension in Japan, where it was developed (originator brand Atelec), and in several other Asian countries including India and China. It is not approved in the United States or the European Union, so it is mainly supplied to markets where it is registered or can be imported under local rules.
