Prazosin is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. It relaxes the smooth muscle of blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, and relaxes the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck.
It is approved for hypertension, alone or with other antihypertensive medicines. In the United Kingdom and some other countries it is also approved for Raynaud's phenomenon, for symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, and as an addition to treatment of congestive heart failure. The originator brand is Minipress (Hypovase in the UK).
Prazosin can cause a marked drop in blood pressure with the first doses, particularly on standing, which prescribers manage by starting low.
