Selexipag is an oral, selective prostacyclin (IP) receptor agonist. It and its active metabolite act on the same receptor as prostacyclin, relaxing the blood vessels of the lungs and inhibiting their abnormal growth, but with a structure that allows oral use.
It is approved for long-term treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in adults, to delay disease progression, either in combination with an endothelin receptor antagonist and/or a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, or on its own in patients who are not candidates for those medicines. In the United States an intravenous form is approved for patients temporarily unable to take tablets. The originator brand is Uptravi.
