Rivaroxaban is a direct oral anticoagulant that selectively inhibits factor Xa, a key enzyme in the clotting cascade, reducing the generation of thrombin and the formation of clots.
It is approved to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in non-valvular atrial fibrillation; to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and reduce the risk of recurrence; to prevent venous thromboembolism after hip or knee replacement and, in the United States, in acutely ill medical patients; and, at the low 2.5mg strength with aspirin, to reduce major cardiovascular events in coronary or peripheral artery disease. It is also approved for venous thromboembolism in children. The originator brand is Xarelto.
