Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial. It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes bacteria need to copy their DNA, and is active against many Gram-negative bacteria.
It is approved for a range of bacterial infections, including complicated urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis, lower respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections such as infectious diarrhoea and typhoid fever, bone and joint infections, and inhalational anthrax and plague. Because of serious side effects affecting tendons, muscles, joints and nerves, regulators in the US and Europe have restricted fluoroquinolones for uncomplicated infections to cases where other antibiotics are not suitable. The originator brand is Ciproxin (Cipro in the US), and ciprofloxacin is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
