Cytarabine, also called cytosine arabinoside or Ara-C, is a pyrimidine nucleoside analogue. Inside cells it is converted to an active triphosphate that blocks DNA polymerase and DNA synthesis in dividing cells.
It is approved for inducing and maintaining remission in acute myeloid leukaemia, and for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and the blast phase of chronic myeloid leukaemia, usually in combination regimens. Given intrathecally, it is used for the prevention and treatment of meningeal leukaemia. It is a backbone of AML induction treatment, often with an anthracycline such as daunorubicin or doxorubicin. Cytarabine is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
Cytarabine is supplied as solution or powder for injection in vials of several strengths, given in hospital under cytotoxic safe-handling procedures. Some products are not suitable for intrathecal use because of their preservatives, so state the intended route and strength when you enquire.
