Fulvestrant is a selective oestrogen receptor degrader (SERD). It binds the oestrogen receptor, blocks it and causes it to be broken down, so oestrogen can no longer stimulate breast cancer cells.
It is approved for hormone-receptor-positive, HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women, either on its own, as first-line treatment or after prior endocrine therapy, or in combination with a CDK4/6 inhibitor such as palbociclib or ribociclib. Combinations with other newer targeted medicines have also been approved. The originator brand is Faslodex.
Fulvestrant is given as an intramuscular injection from prefilled syringes, each containing 250mg, and is stored refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C, so shipments travel in temperature-controlled packaging.
