About gemcitabine: drug class and approved uses

Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analogue antimetabolite. Inside the cell it is converted to active forms that are built into DNA and block further DNA synthesis, killing dividing cells.

It is approved for locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer; for non-small cell lung cancer in combination with cisplatin; for metastatic breast cancer in combination with paclitaxel after prior anthracycline-containing chemotherapy; and for advanced ovarian cancer in combination with carboplatin after relapse. In some countries it is also approved for bladder cancer. The originator brand is Gemzar, and gemcitabine is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

Gemcitabine is given by intravenous infusion in hospital and handled under cytotoxic safe-handling procedures. It is supplied as a powder or a concentrate in vials of different strengths. Carboplatin, paclitaxel and erlotinib, used with gemcitabine in some regimens, are also in our catalog. The vials are usually kept at room temperature; check the brand's label. State the vial strength when you enquire.

Gemcitabine is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
