About imatinib: drug class and approved uses

Imatinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It blocks the BCR-ABL fusion protein produced by the Philadelphia chromosome, and also the KIT and PDGF receptor kinases.

It is approved for Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukaemia in all phases and for Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia; for KIT (CD117)-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumours, both unresectable or metastatic and after surgery; and for dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Further approved uses include myelodysplastic or myeloproliferative diseases with PDGFR gene rearrangements, aggressive systemic mastocytosis, and hypereosinophilic syndrome or chronic eosinophilic leukaemia. The originator brand, Glivec, is in our catalog with Indian brands in 100mg and 400mg.

Imatinib was the first BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Later medicines in the class include dasatinib, nilotinib and bosutinib, and bosutinib is also in our catalog. Imatinib tablets are stored at room temperature. State whether you need 100mg or 400mg when you enquire, since hospital and retail buyers often order different strengths.

Imatinib is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
