Ivermectin is an anthelmintic of the avermectin class. It binds chloride channels in the nerve and muscle cells of parasites, paralysing and killing them.
Oral ivermectin is approved for intestinal strongyloidiasis and for onchocerciasis (river blindness). In some countries, for example in parts of Europe, it is also approved for scabies and for lymphatic filariasis, and it is widely used in mass drug administration programmes against river blindness and lymphatic filariasis. Separate topical formulations are approved for head lice and rosacea. Ivermectin is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Regulators have not approved it for preventing or treating COVID-19. The originator brand is Stromectol.
