Maraviroc is a CCR5 co-receptor antagonist. Many strains of HIV-1 enter human cells by binding the CD4 receptor and then the CCR5 co-receptor; maraviroc binds CCR5 and blocks this step, acting outside the cell rather than on a viral enzyme.
It is approved for the treatment of CCR5-tropic HIV-1 infection, in combination with other antiretrovirals, in adults and children who weigh at least a minimum body weight. Before treatment a tropism test must confirm that the patient's virus uses only CCR5, because maraviroc does not work against virus that uses the CXCR4 co-receptor. The originator brand is Celsentri (Selzentry in the US).
Maraviroc is mainly used in treatment-experienced patients with resistance to other classes. Dolutegravir, raltegravir, darunavir with ritonavir and nucleoside backbones are also in our catalog.
