About paclitaxel: drug class and approved uses

Paclitaxel is a taxane, a cytotoxic medicine originally derived from the Pacific yew tree. It stabilises microtubules, the internal scaffolding a cell uses to divide, so that cancer cells cannot complete division.

It is approved for ovarian cancer, as first-line treatment with a platinum medicine and after failure of prior therapy; for breast cancer, both as adjuvant treatment of node-positive disease and for metastatic disease; for non-small cell lung cancer in combination with cisplatin; and as second-line treatment of AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma. A separate albumin-bound form (nab-paclitaxel, Abraxane) has its own approvals and is not interchangeable. The originator brand of conventional paclitaxel is Taxol, and it is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

Paclitaxel is given by intravenous infusion in hospital, and our catalog lists both conventional and albumin-bound (nab) paclitaxel products. Carboplatin, its most common partner, and trastuzumab are also in our catalog. State whether you need conventional or albumin-bound paclitaxel and the vial strength when you enquire.

Paclitaxel is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
