Pegfilgrastim is a long-acting form of filgrastim, a recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). The attached polyethylene glycol slows its clearance, so it stays active longer than filgrastim while stimulating the bone marrow to produce neutrophils.
It is approved to reduce the duration of neutropenia and the incidence of febrile neutropenia in adults treated with cytotoxic chemotherapy for malignancies other than chronic myeloid leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. In the United States it is also approved for patients acutely exposed to myelosuppressive doses of radiation (the haematopoietic subsyndrome of acute radiation syndrome). The originator brand is Neulasta, and many biosimilars, including Indian biosimilars, are approved.
Pegfilgrastim is supplied in prefilled syringes and stored refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C, so shipments travel in temperature-controlled packaging.
