Posaconazole is a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal. It inhibits the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, blocking the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, and it is active against Aspergillus, Candida and many moulds that cause mucormycosis.
It is approved for the prophylaxis of invasive Aspergillus and Candida infections in high-risk patients, such as stem cell transplant recipients with graft-versus-host disease and patients with prolonged neutropenia from chemotherapy for blood cancers; for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis; and, depending on the country, for oropharyngeal candidiasis and for fungal infections that are refractory to or intolerant of other antifungals. The originator brand is Noxafil.
Posaconazole is available as delayed-release tablets, an oral suspension and an intravenous infusion, which are not interchangeable milligram for milligram. Our catalog lists the 100mg tablet.
