Procarbazine is an oral methylhydrazine derivative that acts as an alkylating agent after it is activated in the body. It damages DNA and inhibits DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in cancer cells.
It is approved for Hodgkin lymphoma as part of combination regimens such as MOPP and BEACOPP. In some countries it is also approved, and widely used, in the PCV regimen with lomustine and vincristine for certain brain tumours, including some gliomas. Originator brands include Natulan and Matulane.
Procarbazine has weak monoamine oxidase inhibitor activity, so patients are advised to avoid alcohol and foods rich in tyramine, such as aged cheese, and some other medicines; this advice comes from the treating team. It is cytotoxic and the capsules are not opened. Vincristine, used with procarbazine in PCV and other regimens, and temozolomide are also in our catalog.
