Short answer
Rifaximin is a minimally absorbed rifamycin antibiotic used for reducing recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea and travellers' diarrhoea. Towada Products exports it from New Delhi, India, supplying Rifaclean in the 550mg strength to licensed buyers in Southeast Asia, the CIS region, the Middle East and select markets in Europe and Africa. Pricing is on enquiry.
Rifaximin is a semi-synthetic rifamycin antibiotic that is barely absorbed from the gut. It acts on bacteria in the intestine by inhibiting their RNA synthesis, while very little reaches the bloodstream.
At 550mg it is approved to reduce the risk of recurrence of overt hepatic encephalopathy in adults with liver disease, usually together with lactulose, and in the United States also for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea in adults. At 200mg it is approved for travellers' diarrhoea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli. The originator brands are Xifaxan and, in parts of Europe, Targaxan.
The two strengths have different approved uses, so state which you need; our catalog lists the 550mg tablet. Hepatology centres are the main buyers, and ursodeoxycholic acid, entecavir and tenofovir for liver disease are also in our catalog. Because so little is absorbed, rifaximin is not used for infections outside the gut. The tablets are kept at room temperature and ship without a cold chain.
Rifaximin is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
