About sunitinib: drug class and approved uses

Sunitinib is an oral multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It blocks several receptor kinases at once, including the VEGF and PDGF receptors involved in forming tumour blood vessels and KIT, which drives the growth of gastrointestinal stromal tumours.

It is approved for advanced renal cell carcinoma, for gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) after disease progression on or intolerance to imatinib, and for progressive, well-differentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours that cannot be removed by surgery. In the United States it is also approved as adjuvant treatment for adults at high risk of kidney cancer returning after nephrectomy. The originator brand is Sutent.

Sunitinib is supplied as capsules in several strengths, so state the strength and pack size when you enquire. Related kinase inhibitors in our oncology catalog include pazopanib, cabozantinib, axitinib and sorafenib, which are used in some of the same cancers; the choice between them is made by the treating oncologist. Kidney cancer and sarcoma centres are the main buyers. The capsules are kept at room temperature, as printed on each brand's pack, and ship without a cold chain.

Sunitinib is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
