Tamoxifen is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM). In breast tissue it blocks the oestrogen receptor, while in some other tissues, such as bone and the lining of the womb, it acts partly like oestrogen.
It is approved for hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in women and men: as adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer and for metastatic disease. In the United States it is also approved after surgery and radiotherapy for ductal carcinoma in situ, and to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women at high risk. Tamoxifen is used in both pre- and postmenopausal women and is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. The originator brand is Nolvadex.
