About trifluridine and tipiracil: drug class and approved uses
Trifluridine and tipiracil is an oral combination. Trifluridine is a thymidine-based nucleoside analogue that is built into DNA and disrupts its function; tipiracil inhibits the enzyme that breaks trifluridine down, keeping its levels high enough to work.
It is approved for metastatic colorectal cancer in patients previously treated with, or not suitable for, fluoropyrimidine, oxaliplatin and irinotecan-based chemotherapy and anti-VEGF and, where relevant, anti-EGFR treatment, either alone or in combination with bevacizumab; and for metastatic gastric or gastro-oesophageal junction adenocarcinoma after at least two prior lines of treatment. The originator brand is Lonsurf.
Low blood counts are the main side effect, so blood tests are done before each cycle. Bevacizumab, regorafenib, capecitabine and fluorouracil are also in our catalog.
