Valacyclovir, spelled valaciclovir in Europe, is a prodrug of aciclovir. It is absorbed much better from the gut and converted to aciclovir, which blocks the DNA polymerase of herpes viruses.
It is approved for herpes zoster (shingles); for genital herpes, including the first episode, recurrent episodes, suppression of recurrences and reducing transmission to a partner; and for cold sores (herpes labialis). It is also approved in some countries for preventing cytomegalovirus infection and disease after solid organ transplantation, and in children for chickenpox in the United States. The originator brand is Valtrex (Zelitrex in some markets).
Kidney function is taken into account because aciclovir is cleared by the kidneys. Valganciclovir, used for cytomegalovirus in transplant recipients, is also in our catalog, so transplant centres can order both.
