Amlodipine is a long-acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It relaxes the smooth muscle of the arteries by blocking calcium entry, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart's oxygen demand.
It is approved for hypertension, alone or with other antihypertensive medicines, and for chronic stable angina and vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina. In the United States it is also approved for patients with angiographically documented coronary artery disease, to reduce the risk of hospitalisation for angina. The originator brand is Norvasc (Istin in the UK), and amlodipine is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
