Short answer

About apixaban: drug class and approved uses

Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant. It directly and reversibly inhibits factor Xa, a key enzyme in the clotting cascade, which reduces the formation of thrombin and blood clots.

It is approved to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in non-valvular atrial fibrillation; to prevent deep vein thrombosis after hip or knee replacement surgery; and to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and reduce the risk of their recurrence. Approvals for children with venous thromboembolism have also been granted in some regions. It is not used in patients with mechanical heart valves. The originator brand is Eliquis.

Apixaban is prescribed by cardiologists, haematologists and orthopaedic surgeons. Dabigatran and rivaroxaban, other direct oral anticoagulants, are also in our catalog. Bleeding risk is the main concern with all anticoagulants, and treatment is not stopped without medical advice. Our catalog lists 2.5mg and 5mg tablets. The tablets are kept at room temperature and ship without a cold chain.

Apixaban is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
