Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). It binds directly to HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, the enzyme the virus uses to copy its RNA into DNA, and stops it working. It is not active against HIV-2.
It is approved for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children, in combination with other antiretroviral medicines. The originator brand of efavirenz alone is Sustiva (Stocrin in some markets). It is widely used in fixed-dose combinations: with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine (originator brand Atripla) and with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and lamivudine, a combination often called TLE.
The products in our catalog are fixed-dose combination tablets containing efavirenz with tenofovir and lamivudine or emtricitabine. Many national programmes have moved first-line treatment to dolutegravir-based regimens, which we also list, but efavirenz combinations remain in use. The tablets are kept at room temperature and ship without a cold chain. State the exact combination and pack size when you enquire.
Efavirenz is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
