Lisinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It blocks the conversion of angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels and makes the body retain salt and water, so blood pressure falls and the heart's workload is reduced.
It is approved for hypertension in adults and children from six years of age; for heart failure, as an addition to other treatment; and for the early treatment of stable patients after an acute heart attack. In Europe it is also approved for kidney complications of diabetes in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Originator brands include Zestril and Prinivil.
Unlike many ACE inhibitors, lisinopril is not a prodrug and does not need to be activated by the liver. A dry cough is a common side effect of the class, and ACE inhibitors are not used in pregnancy.
