Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks the AT1 receptor, preventing angiotensin II from narrowing blood vessels and from triggering salt and water retention, which lowers blood pressure.
It is approved for essential hypertension in adults, and for reducing cardiovascular risk: in Europe, in adults with established atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes with organ damage, and in the United States in patients at high cardiovascular risk who cannot take an ACE inhibitor. It has a long half-life, among the longest in its class. The originator brand is Micardis.
