About tenofovir: drug class and approved uses
Tenofovir is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor, active against HIV-1 and the hepatitis B virus. It is supplied as two different prodrugs: tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF, originator brand Viread) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF, Vemlidy).
TDF is approved for HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretrovirals, for chronic hepatitis B, and, with emtricitabine, for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis. TAF is approved for chronic hepatitis B and is a component of several HIV combination tablets.
