Brivaracetam is an antiepileptic medicine that binds synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A), the same target as levetiracetam, but with higher affinity and selectivity. This modulates the release of neurotransmitters and reduces abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
It is approved for partial-onset seizures, with or without secondary generalisation: in the United States as monotherapy or add-on treatment in adults and children, and in Europe as add-on treatment in adults, adolescents and children. It is available as tablets, oral solution and an intravenous injection. The originator brand is Briviact. In the United States it is a controlled substance (Schedule V).
