About cabergoline: drug class and approved uses

Cabergoline is a long-acting ergot-derived dopamine D2 receptor agonist. Dopamine is the main signal that suppresses prolactin release from the pituitary, so cabergoline lowers prolactin levels for days after each dose.

It is approved for hyperprolactinaemic disorders, whether idiopathic or due to pituitary adenomas such as prolactinomas. In Europe and other regions it is also approved to prevent lactation after childbirth or to suppress established lactation for medical reasons. Higher-strength products for Parkinson's disease are approved in some countries but used only when non-ergot medicines are not suitable. The originator brand is Dostinex.

Long-term use of ergot-derived dopamine agonists has been linked to fibrosis of the heart valves, so European regulators recommend echocardiography before and during prolonged treatment. Our catalog lists the 0.5mg tablet. The tablets are packed with a desiccant to protect them from moisture and are kept at room temperature. Endocrinology and gynaecology buyers are the usual customers.

Cabergoline is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
