Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It is the S-isomer of omeprazole and irreversibly blocks the hydrogen-potassium ATPase, the pump in the stomach lining that secretes acid.
It is approved for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, including healing and maintenance of erosive oesophagitis; for eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with antibiotics; for healing and preventing ulcers associated with NSAID treatment; and for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions with excess acid.
