Etanercept is a fusion protein made of the binding part of the human TNF receptor joined to part of an antibody. It acts as a decoy receptor, binding tumour necrosis factor (TNF) so that it cannot drive inflammation.
It is approved for moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and, in Europe, non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis, and for plaque psoriasis in adults and children. Unlike the TNF antibodies infliximab and adalimumab, it is not approved for inflammatory bowel disease. The originator brand is Enbrel, and biosimilars are approved.
Etanercept is given by subcutaneous injection from prefilled syringes or pens and is stored refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C, so shipments travel in temperature-controlled packaging.
