About ibandronic acid: drug class and approved uses

Ibandronic acid is a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate. It binds to bone and inhibits osteoclasts, the cells that resorb bone, which reduces bone loss.

The 150mg tablet and an intravenous injection (originator brand Bonviva, Boniva in the US) are approved for postmenopausal osteoporosis in women at increased risk of fracture. In Europe, separate strengths (Bondronat) are approved for preventing skeletal events in breast cancer with bone metastases and for tumour-induced hypercalcaemia.

The tablet is taken in a specific way, on an empty stomach and upright, as described in the patient leaflet, to protect the oesophagus. Our catalog lists the 150mg tablet. Denosumab, zoledronic acid and teriparatide are also in our catalog, so buyers can compare osteoporosis treatments in one quotation. The tablets are kept at room temperature and ship without a cold chain. Dental health is reviewed before long-term bisphosphonate treatment. Osteoporosis clinics, gynaecology and endocrinology buyers are the usual customers.

Ibandronic Acid is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
