About octreotide: drug class and approved uses

Octreotide is a synthetic analogue of somatostatin, a hormone that inhibits the release of growth hormone and of many gut hormones. It acts for longer than natural somatostatin.

It is approved for acromegaly when surgery or radiotherapy is not enough or not appropriate, and for the symptoms of functional neuroendocrine tumours, such as the severe diarrhoea and flushing of carcinoid syndrome and the watery diarrhoea of VIP-secreting tumours. Short-acting injections have further uses in some countries. Long-acting release (LAR) formulations are given by intramuscular injection. The originator brand is Sandostatin, with Sandostatin LAR for the long-acting form.

The products in our catalog are long-acting depot injections; short-acting and long-acting forms are not interchangeable, so state which form and strength you need. Long-acting octreotide is usually stored refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C and ships in temperature-controlled packaging; check the brand's label. Everolimus, sunitinib and lanreotide-type therapies are used for neuroendocrine tumours, and everolimus and sunitinib are in our catalog.

Octreotide is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
