Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It irreversibly blocks the hydrogen-potassium ATPase in the parietal cells of the stomach, which is the final step of acid secretion.
It is approved for erosive oesophagitis associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, both healing and maintenance; for symptomatic reflux disease; for pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome; and, in Europe, for eradication of Helicobacter pylori with antibiotics, for duodenal and gastric ulcers, and for preventing ulcers from NSAID treatment in patients at risk. An intravenous form is used in hospital. Originator brands include Protonix and Protium.
