Tamsulosin is a selective alpha-1A adrenergic receptor blocker. Alpha-1A receptors are concentrated in the prostate and bladder neck, and blocking them relaxes the smooth muscle there, easing urine flow.
It is approved for the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as a weak stream, frequent urination and difficulty starting urination. It is not approved for high blood pressure. In clinical practice it is also used to help pass kidney stones, which is outside its labelled indication in most countries. The originator brand is Flomax.
Patients taking tamsulosin should tell their eye surgeon before cataract surgery, because it is associated with intraoperative floppy iris syndrome.
