Teriparatide is a recombinant fragment of human parathyroid hormone, the first 34 amino acids. Given by injection under the skin, it stimulates osteoblasts, the cells that form new bone, rather than mainly slowing bone loss as bisphosphonates and denosumab do.
It is approved for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men at high risk of fracture, and for osteoporosis associated with long-term systemic glucocorticoid treatment.
